Cape Town takes flight with new premium aviation hub

  • Atlantic Aerodrome opens in September 2026 as the Western Cape's first purpose-built premium general aviation hub.
  • Located just 40 minutes from Cape Town, it offers secure hangarage, modern aviation services and reduced congestion.
  • Designed as a complete aviation ecosystem combining operations, maintenance, training, hospitality and lifestyle amenities.

A new era for general aviation in the Western Cape

The Western Cape is set to welcome a significant addition to its aviation infrastructure with the opening of Atlantic Aerodrome in September 2026. Positioned in the Swartland, approximately 40 minutes from Cape Town, the new facility has been purpose-built to serve the growing needs of the region's general aviation sector.

As demand for aircraft hangarage, maintenance facilities and dedicated aviation services continues to outstrip supply, aircraft owners and operators have increasingly found themselves competing for limited space at larger commercial airports.

Atlantic Aerodrome aims to solve this challenge by creating a dedicated aviation precinct designed specifically for private aircraft owners, charter operators, flight schools, maintenance organisations, emergency medical service providers and aviation-related businesses.

Unlike traditional airports where general aviation often competes with commercial traffic, Atlantic Aerodrome has been designed from the ground up around the needs of aviation users, providing a lower-congestion environment with faster access, greater operational efficiency and purpose-built facilities.

Why Atlantic Aerodrome is different

What sets Atlantic Aerodrome apart is its ambition to become far more than simply another airfield.

The development combines aviation infrastructure, premium services and lifestyle amenities into a single integrated destination. The result is a dedicated aviation community where owners, operators, pilots and businesses can operate efficiently while enjoying a high-quality environment.

According to founder Rihan Kleyn, the vision is to create a permanent home for general aviation in the Western Cape. "We're not just building another airfield. We're creating a dedicated home for general aviation in the Western Cape, a place with the infrastructure, services and community that aircraft owners, operators, pilots and aviation businesses have been looking for."

The development responds directly to the rapid growth in aircraft ownership, charter operations, flight training and aviation-related services across the province.

Secure hangarage for every type of operator

A major drawcard of the facility will be its range of flexible hangar solutions designed to accommodate everyone from private owners to large commercial operators.

Available options include:

Hangar Facilities

  • 225m² hangars for private aircraft owners
  • 450m² hangars for small operators and twin-engine aircraft
  • 900m² hangars for multi-aircraft businesses
  • 1,800m² hangars for charter operators, flight schools and larger fleets

All facilities will offer:

  • 24-hour biometric security
  • Direct airside access
  • Modern enclosed storage environments
  • Professional ground handling services
  • Aircraft cleaning and refuelling support
  • Flexible long-term and short-term lease options

Atlantic Aerodrome has been designed as a fully integrated aviation precinct where operators can access virtually every service required to support their aircraft and business operations.

Airfield built for growth

The aerodrome's infrastructure has been designed with future expansion firmly in mind.

The initial runway configuration includes an 884-metre grooved asphalt Runway 02/20 equipped with full LED lighting to enable around-the-clock operations. Future phases will see the runway extended to 1,524 metres, significantly enhancing the facility's ability to accommodate larger aircraft and turboprop operations.

A planned GNSS instrument approach will further improve accessibility and operational reliability. The airport is also targeting an ACR/PCR rating of 23/F/B/X/T, positioning it as a capable and professionally managed aviation facility.

More than flying: Building an aviation lifestyle

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Atlantic Aerodrome is its focus on community and lifestyle.

At the heart of the development will be a striking 1,200m² two-level clubhouse overlooking both the runway and surrounding mountain landscape.

Facilities will include:

  • Restaurants and coffee venues
  • Bars and entertainment spaces
  • VIP lounges
  • Pilot facilities
  • Event and conferencing venues
  • Family recreation areas
  • Children's play park

Membership options will range from Social and Aviator memberships through to VIP and Corporate packages, providing access to exclusive benefits and priority services.

The goal is to create an environment where aviation enthusiasts, business operators and families can spend time beyond simply flying.

Looking ahead

Phase 1 of the development is scheduled to launch in September 2026 and will include the core aviation infrastructure, hangars, fixed-base operator services, clubhouse and guest accommodation facilities.

Future phases will be driven by tenant demand and may include additional hangars, rotary-wing facilities, expanded operational infrastructure and the planned runway extension.

Final approach

As Cape Town and the Western Cape continue to attract business investment, tourism growth and high-net-worth migration, demand for quality aviation infrastructure is expected to increase significantly.

Atlantic Aerodrome arrives at a pivotal moment for the region's aviation sector. By combining modern infrastructure, premium services, operational efficiency and lifestyle amenities, the development is positioning itself as one of South Africa's most ambitious general aviation projects.

For aircraft owners frustrated by congestion, limited hangar space and ageing infrastructure, Atlantic Aerodrome may well represent the future of private and business aviation in the Western Cape.
