Born in England before moving to South Africa as a young child, Johnston joined Mango Groove while still at school before completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Under her leadership, the band achieved multi-platinum album sales and international acclaim, blending township marabi, kwela, jazz and pop into a uniquely South African sound that continues to resonate with audiences today.
