Happy Friday, Property Pros!

What a week it’s been at REI! From the success of the SCALE Short-Term Rental Conference in Cape Town (in partnership with SASTRA) to our high-impact webinars and investor briefings, momentum in the market continues to build, and we’re here for it.

Short-Term Rental Sector in Focus

REI is proud to be working closely with SASTRA, the South African Short-Term Rental Association, as we prepare for incoming regulatory changes. The STR sector remains robust, innovative, and filled with growth potential, but like any maturing industry, smart advocacy and clear policy are crucial for long-term sustainability. Watch this space.

Good news of the Week

Interest Rate Cut Widens Buyer Affordability

The South African Reserve Bank has cut the repo rate by 25bps to 7.00%, lowering the prime lending rate to 10.50%. This move offers homeowners and buyers some relief, trimming monthly bond repayments and improving affordability, especially for first-time and mid-market purchasers.

Globally, the US Fed held rates steady, but markets anticipate cuts later this year as inflation cools and growth slows.

For investors, this is a potential window to act, consider refinancing, strategic acquisitions, or portfolio reshaping while borrowing costs ease. Improved confidence and affordability could help reignite activity in the property market. Read more here
